The Rhythm of the Rain: Amazon.co.uk: Baker-Smith, Grahame, Baker-Smith, Grahame: 9781787410152: Books

Welcome back to school!

I can't believe we are in Spring already, this school year is flying by. This half-term we have some exciting learning coming up.

Curriculum

In English, we are reading 'The Rhythm of the Rain' by Grahame Baker-Smith, a stunning picture book which explores the water cycle. We follow a raindrop's progress down waterfalls, into rivers, lakes and sea, and back into the clouds. We will be developing our vocabulary to describe water, creating similes and sentences using personification. We will also be creating our own Haiku poem. It is a traditional Japanese poetic art form in which poems consist of three lines.

In Maths, we will be doing fractions. Y4- Children explore fractions in different representations. For example, fractions of shapes, quantities and fractions on a number line. Y5- Children convert improper fractions to mixed numbers for the first time. An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. A mixed number is a number consisting of an integer and a proper fraction.

In Geography, What are rivers and how are they used? - From the water cycle to studying a local river we will be learning all about the remarkable movement of water across the earth.

In Science, Y3/4 will learn about how we see objects, the ways in which different objects reflect different amounts of light and how these ideas can be applied to staying safe at night. They will explore what causes a shadow, as well as how the shape and size of a shadow can be affected by its position.

In Music, we will continue to learn how to play our string instruments.

In DT, we are creating a functional Doodler that creates scribbles on paper with or without a switch.

In RE, we are learning all about the traditions Lent and Easter. Lent is the Church’s season for discerning and doing good. In the Christian Year, Lent precedes and prepares for Easter. It is a penitential season and a time of spiritual growth. If people want to be followers of Jesus, they must be prepared to notice what others need and then see what they can do to help. During Lent, this is traditionally put into practice through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Christians make Lenten promises, saying what they hope to do during Lent. Christians practise this throughout the Lenten season to remind them of the complete self-offering of Jesus which is remembered in the liturgy of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil).
